In a densely populated part of the suburb, surrounded by residential high-rise and apartment buildings, Unison Housing have developed a long term Food forest project as a community resource. In 2019, based on the successful implementation of the Closed Loop project Compost Hub at Kensington Town Hall, a community composting facility was identified as an important facility to support:

  • Low emission food waste management for surrounding residences
  • Kitchen and catering waste management for community programs
  • Managing Food Forest clippings, weeding and plant materials
  • Generating an ongoing and low impact source of garden nutrients
  • Creating an activity space encouraging community participation

We undertook a study of the site requirements and developed a standalone, medium-scale hot composting solution to support physical access for a wide range of community composters, processing of a suitable volume of varying inputs, all in an open and relatively high traffic area.

The finished build was constructed entirely of reclaimed hardwood pallet timber, longrun steel roofing offcuts recovered from residential building projects and assembled with recyclable corrosion-resistant galvanised (zinc-coated steel) fasteners.
